Crib Bumpers: Still Dangerous

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Yesterday the Chicago Tribune published an amazing article on the serious risks of traditional crib bumpers. Not only did it discuss infant death as a result of a bumper, but it also showed many statistics that parents typically are not aware of. Alarming numbers that consumer safety agencies have known about for year, yet crib bumpers are still on the list of must haves for nurseries nationwide.

For the end of the year, Go Mama Go Designs has slashed the cost of our safe wonder bumpers 50%!   We truly care about mothers, and their babies and want the safest sleep spaces for your babies!

Help us fight against unsafe sleep spaces for babies, and have traditional crib bumpers recalled once and for all!

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

Did you know that October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month? There are over 400,000 living with Down Syndrome in the United States.  Down Syndrome occurs when an individual has three, rather than two, copies of the 21st chromosome. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down Syndrome. It wasn’t until June 24th, 2010 that I really learned about Down Syndrome.  It was the day after my Molly was born.

With no family history and my pre-natal tests showing there was a very low risk of any problems, we were shocked when doctors informed us that Molly had been diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Research shows that a healthy 31-year old mother has a 1 in 900 chance of having a child with Down syndrome… and I was chosen as “the one”.

The last few months have been a roller coaster of emotions. I’ve thought a lot about what I would say to someone if they were put in this situation. What do you say? How do you acknowledge the situation? Here are a few tips: Congratulate the new parents! After all, they did just have a baby – the birth of a child is exciting and an extra chromosome shouldn’t change anything! If you have a positive story about Down Syndrome, share it! Let them know that you want to help them along on this journey. It’s reassuring to know that they have support of close friends and family. Keep in mind that some moms may not be comfortable talking about the situation, I found it therapeutic. I didn’t want to shy away from the topic and I wanted everyone to learn about Down Syndrome with us.

As a family, we are learning new things about the disorder every day.  One of the most important things we have learned is that people diagnosed with Down syndrome go on to lead extremely rewarding lives. We are determined to make sure that Molly does too. If you’d like to research on your own, I encourage you to visit the National Down Syndrome Society’s website (www.ndss.org).

Do you have a personal connection with Down Syndrome? If so, I’d love for you to share it with me.

Wonder Bumper Review by A Mom’s Take

GoMamaGo Designs – Wonder Bumpers Review

GoMamaGo Designs generously sent me a set of Wonder Bumpers to review. If you took at look at my tour my home nursery post you will have already got a sneak peak at the bumpers I’m about to show you! I have 42 slats on my crib so I choose a 38 set of Blue Bird as it is very gender neutral and would look beautiful with my nursery theme. I then choose to have 6 in Lotus sent to add a splash of green into the scheme! The bumpers are beautiful and I was really impressed with how soft and nice they look and feel. They were also really easy to put on. They attach by zipper and the hardest part is just lining up the top part where the zipper attaches and then from there it’s just pull down and flip it around to wherever you want the zipper – the side or the back of the slat depending. I have the zippers facing the back wall on all 4 sides of the crib.

Wonder Bumpers

Each bumper is reversible so you get two patterns which each bumper so you can mix and match and make a really fun look! The Blue Bird set has solid white on the back and I choose to have them mostly just white so I didn’t have an overwhelming amount of print as my nursery does have quite a bit of decor already on the walls with the characters we painted. I mostly wanted bumpers to prevent my babies legs from getting stuck through the slats as I’ve had happen often and it always leaves them in pain so I put my 22 month old in and told him to kick like crazy to see what would happen. As you can see in the picture above he was able to kick his legs out through the slat still but wasn’t able to get his legs out past his knees, and not even very far down as they are at an angle in this picture. It also didn’t leave his legs sore and red like they would typically get and he was able to pull his legs back out himself as well. My newborn probably wouldn’t be able to pull their legs out, but at least they wouldn’t be in pain! I did notice that the Blue Bird set appeared a little bit dirty on the white side and when asking about this learned this has been a little bit of an issue just because they are pure white and so they show up dirt very easy. I also had one bumper with a small hole near the bottom seam and another that was very thin and nearing becoming a hole. I also had one with the zipper that went the wrong way. When I contact customer service about the issues though they were very quick to offer replacements and sent them right out to me without any hassle. GoMamaGo Designs strives to have very high customer service and they were very easy to work with when I did notice a problem.

GoMamaGo Designs is working on a petition to get unsafe crib bumpers off the market! They are looking for help in signing the petition to get the word out to the Consumer Product Safety Commission that the bumper market needs to be examined and tested to ensure safety for our children! You can sign the petition here!

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

I am sure there are a lot of readers out there asking themselves, what is this new design section of our blog?  What does it mean? What is it all about?

Well rest your heads, and I will explain!

We are looking for our readers to submit pictures, stories, suggestions, and design tips for nurseries!  Whether it is something you did in your own nursery, something you wanted to do, or tips on what to do and not to do.

We are also going to be looking for pictures of cribs decorated with our Wonder Bumpers. We want to see your nursery which has our safe crib bumpers in place! We want others to see how cute they are, and how they are a great designing tool!

Testament of Wonder Bumpers from a Special Needs Mother

Monday, July 26th, 2010

We at Go Mama Go recently put out a request for stories from several areas of the country. One of those areas was the Philadelphia metro area.  We were contacted by an amazing mother willing to tell her wonder bumper story. Below is the testament of Rebecca McKerns and her daughter :

My daughter is almost 2 years old and has recently been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Her condition causes her to sometimes lose her balance when sitting, and would cause her to bump her head on her hard wooden crib rails. She also has limited mobility, and will sometimes get her legs or arms caught in the rails of her crib. I had been searching for a product that would give her the safety and comfort she needed, and also the piece of mind I needed for both of us to get a good nights sleep. I had called our doctor, local hospitals, local special needs organizations, and only to be told what I had already knew about, but didnt want to risk.. using the standard crib bumper, or as one nurse told me ” just try to have someone rig something up for you, but then you risk being liable should anything happen!” Not a chance I’d like to take! I did alot of my own searching and came across your product. I believe I placed my order within 2 minutes of getting on your site! I knew right away that this was just what I had been looking.. rather desperately searching for! And as an added bonus, they were PRETTY and in Pink!! My order came within 3 days, and we couldn’t wait to try them out! They were so easy to put on and fit great! My daughter loved the feel of them (which was another plus since she is really just learning to sit and reach for things,,this gives her something nice and soft to touch!) She immediately sat up in her new beautiful crib, looked around, reached out, lost her balance, but this time.. NO BUMP noise.. NO CRYING… A wonder indeed!! Your Wonder Bumpers are heaven sent and I can’t thank you enough for coming up with such a great product! I love knowing that my daughter is safe now and that she will be in the future as we convert her to a bed, complete with Wonder Bumpers on the rails!!  I will be spreading the word about your product to anyone I know and hope to save many more noggins like my daughters!!”

We hope that with more stories like this, the public can see the amazing resource Wonder Bumpers provide, especially to special needs children.
